St. Bernards'

St. Bernards'

Just another one of the cathedrals which dot the Italian country side. This is the original St. Bernards cathedral. In the basement you can view the ruins of a more ancient place of worship. Dating from the earliest times of Christianity, the underground shrine represents a time when Christians were persecuted for their beliefs. Cathedrals, churches, chapels, shrines, Italy is littered with these religious icons. Many have fallen into disrepair. Falling victim to neglect, and changing demographics, they haunt the landscape like the ghosts of Christmas past. Photo taken Dec '86.
